Amidst the glamorous backdrop of the recent Paris Couture Week, Yasmine Shihata, Founder and CEO of Enigma Magazine, sat down with Ward for an exclusive interview. Their fascinating conversation delved into the intricacies of the fashion world and offered a captivating glimpse into Ward’s world and the indomitable spirit of the Lebanese fashion industry.

The son of the Lebanese fashion designer, Elie Ward, Tony Ward was born into the fascinating world of couture and design. Having grown up surrounded by opulent silks and exquisite gowns from a young age, his upbringing was steeped in the rich tapestry of fashion. When he was eighteen years old, he embarked on a transformative journey to Paris, where he studied at the prestigious L’Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, the epitome of fashion design education.

Immersing himself in the vibrant atmosphere of Parisian couture, Ward honed his skills under the tutelage of legendary designers. He worked alongside Gianfranco Ferré at Christian Dior Couture, collaborated with Karl Lagerfeld at Chloé, and apprenticed with Claude Montana at Lanvin. Learning from the masters, Ward absorbed the invaluable knowledge and techniques of Haute Couture and the highest standards of craftsmanship.

After seven years in Paris, Ward returned to his homeland, Lebanon, and unveiled his own couture line in 1995. Fusing his innate talent and design skills with the master craftsmanship of the family Atelier Ward, he embarked on his couture journey, creating Haute Couture collection characterised by exquisite femininity and unparalleled sophistication.

Ward’s exceptional talent swiftly garnered recognition within the fashion world. His creativity earned him the prestigious 1st prize at the design competition at the Société des Artistes et Décorateurs. His captivating drawings were prominently displayed at the Musée Galliera, the esteemed Fashion Museum of Paris in 1997.

Reflecting on how he burst onto the global fashion scene, Ward proudly recalls, “Twenty years ago, I had my very first show in Rome. My debut in Paris came a decade later, and today, I am sitting here in Paris Fashion Week with you.” These days Ward crafts two couture collections annually, in addition to creating two ready-to-wear collections and two bridal collections each year.

Ward’s couture designs are increasingly adored by Arab celebrities fascinated by his fresh take on couture. Ward has also joined the growing number of Lebanese designers who have penetrated the glamorous realm of Hollywood, with their collections gaining exposure among international celebrities. “We have a good presence in the international world of fashion, and we are happy with our success,” Ward exclaims, highlighting the achievements of several other Lebanese designers who paved the way for his success. He confidently emphasises the pivotal role of events like Cannes Film Festival and red carpets worldwide in elevating his brand’s visibility and driving sales.

Ward explains that the inspirations for his designs stem from an exploration of various subjects, ranging from architecture and mathematics to art, as well as reading and engaging with a diverse array of individuals. These inspirations inform his vision of fashion and choice of fabrics such as satin, chiffon, tulle, and many more. They allow him to translate his multifaceted inspirations into tangible, wearable expressions of creativity and elegance. Aptly named “The Architect of Detail”, he draws his inspiration from contemporary architecture, which helps him envision sculptural forms, create innovative techniques and play with the boundaries of light and transparency.

“My latest collection is inspired by a mathematical formula known as the Golden Ratio, which embodies the proportion of all aspects of life. It beautifully illustrates the harmony and balance inherent in our daily existence, highlighting the beauty and significance within each of us,” he explains.

Ward proudly asserts that his designs are 100% crafted in Beirut, underscoring his commitment to supporting and showcasing the exceptional talent and craftsmanship of Lebanese artisans. He adds that he imports materials and stones from Italy, France and Austria, and his 3D designs are printed in NYC and Jordan.

Ward is adamant that despite the challenges faced by Lebanon, he is determined to continue crafting and producing his exquisite pieces amidst any adversity that comes his way. Recalling the time when Yasmine Shihata visited the Tony Ward office and showroom in Beirut in the aftermath of the devastating explosion that rocked the city in 2020, Ward asserts resolutely, “It’s a challenge that other designers worldwide do not face, but we have to deal with our daily complications, and we are always ready and prepared, as we have been dealing with this most of our lives. Nothing will break us.”
“Nothing would make me consider relocating and leaving my hometown,” he adds, a sentiment that serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and unwavering spirit of the Lebanese people.

Looking ahead, the visionary Haute Couture designer has ambitious plans to expand his influence on the global fashion landscape. Recognising their vast potential, his ambitious goals include tapping back into the lucrative Russian market, as well new markets in South America and South/East Asia.

At the end of the interview, Ward expresses his fondness for Egypt, and his hope for potential collaborations there in the future. “Perhaps we can work together, Yasmine. You can organise an event by the Pyramids, and I’ll take care of the fashion and design!”
