The 2019 MTV VMAs took place last night at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. This year’s show was packed with extravagant red carpet looks and performances that had us dancing (and crying) in our living rooms. If you didn’t have a chance to watch the show, don’t worry, because we’ve compiled a list of the most important moments of the evening.
1) Taylor Swift Opens the Show
The mega superstar, who dropped her highly anticipated album Lover this past weekend, opened the VMAs with an empowering performance of her inclusive pop anthem You Need To Calm Down, which transitioned into a stripped down guitar performance of her new single Lover.
2) Sebastian Maniscalco’s Hosting Skills
The VMAs are never complete without a host, but maybe this year they probably should’ve pulled an Oscars and not had one. The actor and stand-up comedian, Sebastian Maniscalco, proved to be a less than funny MC. Many of the jokes and monologues throughout the show fell flat and the audience was not impressed. Viewers took to social media to show their unenthusiastic reactions to Maniscalco’s awkward hosting abilities and overall, it was not MTV’s best year host wise.
3) Miley Cyrus’ Emotional Performance
With the recent news of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth’s split, fans didn’t expect Miley to drop a new song so quickly, let alone take over the VMA stage. Cyrus, announced as a performer only hours before the VMAs kicked off, took the stage to give a heartfelt performance of recently released track, Slide Away, serving us with outstanding vocals while she was at it.
4) The Jonas Brothers Make Their VMA Comeback
Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers on the same stage, in 2019? The power group performed their #1 hit Sucker and took our hearts away like it’s 2009 all over again.
5) Lizzo’s Energizing Performance
Another award show, another spectacular performance by Lizzo. The rising star, surrounded by her energised backup dancers, brought us a fun packed performance of her viral hits Truth Hurts and Good as Hell.
6) Ariana Grande Winning Big
Don’t remember Ariana Grande being there? Well, she wasn’t. She was there in spirit, however, bagging six Moon Men trophies out of her twelve nominations, including Artist of the Year and Song of The Summer for her hit with Social House—Boyfriend.
7) Missy Elliott Accepts the Video Vanguard Award
After performing a medley of some of her greatest hits, Missy Elliott accepted her MTV Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and joined the star-studded list of honourees like Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and Michael Jackson himself. Elliott gave an emotional speech in which she held back tears, saying, “I’ve worked diligently for over two decades and I never thought that I would be standing up here receiving this award, so it means a lot to me.”
8) Lil Nas X Makes His VMAs Debut
Lil Nas X took the old town road to the MTV stage with a wild performance of his new hit Panini. The performance was definitely one of the highlights of the night with Nas’ over-the-top outfit taking centre stage both on the carpet and during the performance.
9) H.E.R. Accessorizing With A Snake
All eyes were on R&B singer and Grammy winning artist H.E.R as she walked the carpet in a glamorous floral green Valentino jumpsuit with none other than a snake as the perfect accessory for the look. When asked, H.E.R said the snake was one of five that she keeps in her house as pets. H.E.R confirmed that it was an accidental homage to Britney Spears iconic 2003 performance, but it made for a great look, nevertheless.
10) Camila Cabello & Shawn Mendes
The new couple put the rumours to rest at the award show and finally confirmed their relationship, despite walking the red carpet separately. They came together later in the evening for a captivating performance of their smash hit Senorita which went #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 only hours before the show, making it Mendes’ first chart topper and Cabello’s second.
