Summer vibes are here! What better way to chill out than to go to the cinema and experience what this season has to offer. This list includes a variety of Egyptian and foreign films that suit different tastes and ages. Some are new creative ideas while others are highly anticipated sequels, so let’s dig in and explore this rich entertainment menu.
Ahl Al Kahf
(People of the Cave)
Historical fantasies have been quite successful globally in recent years, and now Egyptian cinema is joining the race with this summer’s feature film, Ahl El Kahf, to be released on June 16th. The plot tells the story of three people who fall asleep in a cave for 300 years and awake to a new world that is socially and culturally different from what they knew. The cast roster includes Khaled El Nabawi, Ghada Adel, Mohamed Mamdouh and Mohamed Farag.
Ferket Moot
(Death Squad)
Fereat Moot is an action film set in the 1940s that follows police officer Omar on a quest to capture a dangerous criminal in southern Egypt. Audiences will be waiting to see if the chemistry between Ahmed Ezz, who plays Omar, and Asser Yassin, as the villain, works well. Other cast members include Menna Shalaby, Amina Khalil and Mahmoud Hemeda.
El Hawa Sultan
(Love Rules)
Following their first joint film, Al Maa Wal Khodra Wal Wagh Al Hassan (Brooks, Meadows and Lovely Faces), this is the second coolaboration between superstars Ahmed Dawood and Menna Shalaby. In this rom-com, engineer Ahmed Dawood falls in love with government employee Menna Shalaby, who has complex feelings towards men due to past trauma caused by her father.
Welad Rizk 3
(Sons of Rizk 3)
Returning with a new chapter in the summer of 2024, Welad Rizk 3 will feature several changes to its usual tone. Meanwhile, the introduction of Asser Yassin in the role of Al Shayeb, may be the answer to the criticism that the franchise was lacking a special type of villain. The plot will revolve around the revenge quest of Al Shayeb against Welad Rizk, with glimpses of their history together.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F
Beverly Hills Cop is an action-comedy blockbuster that boomed in the 1980s with Eddie Murphy as the lead star. The classic franchise is being revived by Netflix with a fourth installment set to be released on July 3rd. The plot follows Axel Foley’s daughter, Jane, who receives death threats and starts working alongside her father and ex-boyfriend to unravel this mystery. Once again Eddie Murphy is the leading star alongside Joseph Levitt and Taylour Paige.
Ezra
There is nothing like a classic comedy to lighten up the mood, especially if it features a veteran star like Robert De Niro. Ezra is a comedy-drama which narrates the story of Max Brandel, a stand-up comedian who is struggling to co-parent his autistic son Ezra with his ex-wife, Jenna. The film, to be released on May 31st, features a cast that includes Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale and Vera Farmiga.
Deadpool & Wolverine
Deadpool has turned into a superhero comedy classic that everyone enjoys. Now it is coming back as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will be its first R-rated movie. The film includes several Marvel characters, most notably Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, who together are expected to add to the movie’s comedic aspect. Some fans, however, have concerns that Deadpool may be restricted in its content due to Marvel’s regulations. We will find out on July 26th.
IF
What if John Krasinski and Ryan Reynolds worked together on a fantasy movie? That is right, IF is such a movie and it is to be released on May 17th. Written and directed by John Krasinski, it tells the story of a young girl who can see imaginary friends who were abandoned by the kids they helped. Expected to be funny and emotional, with lots of creativity, this is a big one to watch out for in 2024. The cast of stars includes Ryan Reynolds, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.
