Getting a buzz cut must be a daunting experience for anyone, probably hair-raising, but without the hair! Hearing the buzzing sounds slowly nearing towards your scalp…..buzz…..carefully closing in, painfully so. Nevertheless, the following stars are virtuosos in the art of paying no mind to critique by the masses. And there is something so deeply appealing, hugely alluring and incredibly enigmatic about the person sewn to the cut.
Perhaps not the pioneer in getting a buzz cut, yet the model has certainly been on the vanguard of this hip hairdo. Having worn it for many years now, buzz cut connotations must almost always include Amber Rose and her affluent lifestyle.
Who would have thought that this modern-day belle would rock a buzz cut, with fierce and absolute femininity? The actress is all but banal, and actually chose an early phase of voluntary baldness during her younger years, deciding that it would be easier if she just shaved her head off. That was long before her 2002 film Heaven.
Solange, the singer-songwriter and younger sister of Beyoncé, has sported the buzz cut with a number of voguish looks, dressing the style wonderfully. She has revealed that chopping her locks was related to her desire to escape “the bondage that black women sometimes put on themselves with hair.” Solange also told Oprah that she was spending a whopping $40,000-$50,000 a year on hair-care and products alone.
Where others may have favoured a shorter hairstyle, the acclaimed actress went completely bald for her role in Ridley Scott’s G.I. Jane. Her daughter followed not so long after.
Another actress that rocked the buzz cut for a movie role. Charlize Theron told American radio personality Ryan Seacrest that shaving her head was “the most freeing thing.”
She’s known for playing the mortal – later turned immortal – Bella in the Twilight film series, and for matching Converse sneakers to Chanel outfits whilst walking the Cannes Film Festival’s red carpet. This rebel underwent a massive overnight change in appearance, replacing her neatly worn, brunette locks with a more outré, bleached buzz cut. The young Hollywood starlet shared her reasons for doing that. She called it “practical,” and said that it is something she has been meaning to do, if only for the sake of novelty.
Jessica Ellen Cornish, widely known as Jessie J, has bravely adopted the style for charity. The singer kept the look for several months after. “There’s no point shaving your head for charity if you’re going to grow it back the next day,” she said of her desire to make a statement.
With two Golden Globes, a BAFTA, a SAG Award and an Oscar, it should come as no surprise to learn that the magnificent actress did not mind forfeiting her tresses for the sake of her craft.
Ryder Robinson, the son and muse of Kate Hudson, inspired the Almost Famous star leading to her jumping onto the buzz cut bandwagon. The actress wore it confidently on red carpets, even though this confidence may have eluded her prior to getting the cut, as she panicked, “What is the shape of my head going to look like?”
While others graced the MET Gala with their awe-inspiring outfits, supermodel-turned actress Cara Delevingne turned heads with her silver painted bald head. Though she might have initially shaved her head for her role as a cancer patient in Life in a Year, what the model really wanted was to challenge the standards in beauty, calling the stunt “liberating.”
