Pharaonic Tomb with 50 Mummies Discovered in Minya

On Saturday, 50 mummies were discovered by Egyptian Archaeologists in a Pharaonic Tomb in Minya, south of Cairo dating back to the Ptolemaic era (305- 30BC). The mummies, of which 12 children and six animals have been identified, were found in four burial chambers 9m deep in the Tuba El-Gebel site.

Some were bound in linen while others were in stone coffins or wooden sarcophagi. Although the identities of the mummies are still unknown, as Archaeologists have not found any names in hieroglyphics, it is evident by the methods of mummification that the individuals held some importance.

Visitors and Ambassadors assembled at the site for the announcement ceremony. This Archaeological finding was a joint project with the Research Centre for Archaeological Studies of Minya University.
