The Most Common Makeup Mistakes

We all like to believe that when we apply makeup, we do it as well as any professional does, or to the standard of a celebrity glam squad – let’s be honest, we all wish we had a glam squad for our daily lives. However, that is not always the case. We all have a tendency to unknowingly commit makeup felonies, even when we think we’ve got it right. Here are a few common makeup mistakes and tips on how to fix them!

Using the wrong foundation shade

Do you have a problem with your foundation not matching your skin perfectly? Here’s where you’re going wrong:

You’re testing foundation shades either on the back of your hand, or on your cheeks, when you should be testing it across your jawline – so that you can see if the colour matches both your face and neck.

You’re using foundation shades that don’t match your skin undertones. Identify your undertones! Is your skin more on the pink side or on the yellow side? Foundation isn’t just about your skin tone.

Filling in your eyebrows a little too heavily

Women have a tendency to outline their eyebrows using a pencil, which can create harsh, obvious lines around the eyebrows. Alternatively, use an eyebrow powder and an angled brush, and gently apply strokes of the powder to fill in the lighter areas of your eyebrows. Use a clear eyebrow gel to set the powder and you’re good to go!

Applying blush/bronzer to wrong areas on the face

Bronzer should be applied to the sides of your face in the shape of a 3 (side of your forehead, below your cheekbones and along your jawline).

Blush should be applied lightly on the apples of your cheeks and blended outward towards the bronzed area.

Overlining your lips

Of course, we all want the fuller Angelina Jolie lips. However, intensely overlining your lips is a major mistake because 9 times out of 10, it will be too obvious.

For a little lip enhancement, line exactly outside the edge of your lips – no further out than that! This will give a subtle fuller lip and it will still look natural.

Excessively applying highlighter

There is an extremely fine line between a dewy glow and looking sweaty.

Apply highlighter only to the high points of the face (above cheekbones, on your cupid’s bow, along the bridge of the nose and on your forehead).

If you have oily/combination skin, skip applying highlighter to your forehead and nose.

Having flaky/creased foundation

If you’re having an issue with foundation sinking into creases on your skin, or looking flaky, you probably aren’t priming properly.

Always apply moisturiser or primer before foundation because that is the base of having a perfect finish to your makeup.

Applying concealer incorrectly

Does the camera flash ever make concealer appear as a white smudge under your eyes?

Apply concealer in the shape of an upside down triangle underneath your eyes, rather than one line over your dark circles.

Use a concealer that is one shade lighter than your foundation, not just any light shade.

BONUS TIP!

Always apply your makeup in REALLY good lighting for best results!
