Miss Philipines, the beautiful 24-year old Catriona Gray was crowned Miss Universe 2018 last night in Bangkok. Competing against the record-high 93 other countries and territories, Filipina-Australian Gray is the fourth Filipina to win the title.
Host country contestant, Miss Thailand, Sophida Kanchanarin managed to secure a spot in the top 10 but second and third place went to South African Tamaryn Green and Venezuelan contestant Sthefany Gutiérrez. Meanwhile, Miss Congeniality went to Miss Australia, Francesca Hung; Best National Costume went to Miss Laos, On-anong Homsombath; and Miss Photogenic went to Miss Albania, Trejsi Sejdini.
This year’s competition was quite controversial with a transgender contestant taking part for the first time ever: Miss Spain, Angela Ponce who failed to make it to the top 20.
Representing Egypt was Nariman Khaled, the beauty queen from Hurghada.
Previous Filipina title winners were Pia Wurtzbach (2015), Gloria Diaz (1969) and Margarita Moran (1973).
