Love is in the Air

It takes a strong bond to build a healthy relationship, but when love is in the air and true matches are made in heaven, power couples are born. Our ultimate lovebirds share with us how their devotion to one another began and their secrets to a long, successful marriage.

Two of a Kind

Eman Fahmy & Shamel Aboul Fadl

How did you meet?

She: We met at AUC. I was a freshman and he was a senior.

He: She was as striking then as she is today.

Who said “I love you” first?

She: Being very shy, he did.

He: Eman was always very shy; I was the first to say, “I love you.”

How long have you been together?

She: Since I was 17 years old.

He: We have been together most of my life. Eman is my college sweetheart. This June, we will be celebrating our 22nd wedding anniversary.

What do you like most about each other?

She: Aside from being a very dedicated and caring husband and father, Shamel has a very romantic side that he hasn’t lost over the years. I love how he makes me feel that we are still college sweethearts!

He: I love everything about her. I especially enjoy her sense of humour and honesty.

What would you change about each other?

She: Maybe he can be a bit more laid-back; he is too restless sometimes.

He: Her punctuality. She seems to have a 60-minute time difference.

What’s the secret to a happy marriage?

She: Always work hard to keep the spark alive! Never take your spouse for granted, and spend quality time together, just the two of you talk and listen to each other, fight and make up, laugh and, sometimes, even be silly!

He: Learning to reach common ground, and regularly taking time out to travel alone as a couple to someplace romantic to rejuvenate  the relationship and remind yourself  what made you fall in love in the first place.

Twos Company

Nivine Saada & Mohamed Farouk

How did you meet?

We met at a wedding. Then, we met again, by coincidence, with common friends.

Who said “I love you” first?

He did.

How long have you been together?

For 26 years, married for 23 of them.

What do you like most about each other?

She: He is my husband, boyfriend and best friend. He is also a great father. He makes me feel safe and he is the man I want to grow old with.

He: Her smile and heart. She is my partner in life and an amazing mom, and she always has my back. She is my wife and friend.

What would you change about each other?

She: I wish he would listen to me more.

He: Nothing.

What’s the secret to a happy marriage?

She: No marriage is perfect; you have to make it a priority. You always have to work on your relationship and try to make your partner feel happy and loved. Friendship, love and trust are essential, as well as compromise. A happy marriage is about choosing to love your husband every day through the ups and downs of daily life and laughing together through it all.

He: Our marriage is our private life, and no one should interfere between us. When we have a problem, we fix it together without involving anyone. Love, friendship, mutual respect and never giving up on each other are all essential.
