How to Make Your Makeup Last All Day

One of the most frequently asked questions about makeup is: “If someone gets their makeup applied too early, will it stay on perfectly until the day ends?”

With the right techniques and products, your makeup can last for as long as 15 hours if you need it to. Not that we recommend going that long with makeup on for no apparent reason, but generally speaking, it is possible for your look to last that long and still look the exact way it did when you first applied it; no smudged eyeliner or creased eye shadow guaranteed!

PRIME!

Face, eyes, lips, everything! Primer is the key to having makeup on for hours.

Face: Skin primers are essential to makeup application because they make sure that your foundation doesn’t start to crack or look flaky at the end of the day; it stays smooth.

Eyes: Eye shadow should never be applied without a primer. Two of the best go-tos are Benefit’s Stay Don’t Stray eye shadow primer, and a neutral shade of MAC’s Paint Pot cream eye shadow (such as Painterly or Soft Ochre). With this product, a little bit goes a long way. Use a flat brush to apply light strokes of the cream shadow and then blend it slightly with your finger. Eye shadow goes on perfectly with either of those and is guaranteed to stay exactly in place.

Lips: Always use a lip primer as a base so that the lipstick can stick to it and stay on for a long time without you having to reapply it.

SET!

The most important thing to ensure that your makeup won’t move is applying something to set it in place when you’re done.

For this step, you can either use a fixing spray, or apply a loose setting powder all over the face. We know what you’re thinking: powder will make your face look cakey. But, seriously, we swear by this. Translucent powder doesn’t create a layer on the skin, and all it does is set your concealer and foundation so that nothing sinks into the lines on your skin to ensure that the makeup stays on all day.

If you need to take extra measures with keeping your makeup on, do both! Apply loose powder first, and then, right before you leave the house, spritz a bit of fixing spray to really secure the makeup.

For even longer-lasting results, here are some optional extra tips:

To prep for a long day of makeup, always use waterproof products because they tend to last longer. Your everyday mascara shouldn’t be waterproof, but if you want to keep it on for hours for a long night, always go for waterproof.

Opt for gel eyeliner or waterproof liquid eyeliner. If you’re applying eyeliner to your waterline – always go for a gel or waterproof pencil eyeliner.

Try to stick to using cream or liquid products because they stay on longer than powder products – cream contour, liquid foundation, cream eye shadow, cream blush and even liquid lipstick.

We’ve saved you the trouble of worrying about your makeup fading throughout the day! If you follow these guidelines, there is no reason why you can’t have flawless makeup on that won’t wear off  for hours. Seriously, it’ll be so good you won’t want to remove it to sleep.
