Ashes to Ashes

A Tribute to David Bowie

The entertainment world woke up on Monday to deeply saddening news of the passing away of one of the 1970s biggest Heroes, David Bowie, of cancer, at the age of 69. The news that Bowie’s soul now lays firmly Under the God came after a valiant, 18 month battle with the unrelentingly heinous disease. Undoubtedly, Bowie’s death will leave a gaping void in our hearts, as well as many all around the world, for the indistinguishable Sound and Vision that he’s left on the music industry in his 50 year career. The Sorrow felt was perfectly illustrated by the amount of tributes given out to Bowie by many of the biggest names of the industry, ranging from Madonna to Kanye West to even British Prime Minister, David Cameron.

During his career, Bowie’s Fame wasn’t solely predicated by his pristine voice, but was also distinguished by his status as one of the founding fathers of British Pop-Rock, along with The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Further, Bowie’s Day-In Day-Out attitude to music allowed him to be one of the first people to create a musical alter-ego, called Ziggy Stardust, that allowed him to channel parts of his personality that might have not existed otherwise, a feat that could be best seen recently in Eminem’s Slim Shady persona for instance. Ziggy Stardust’s ‘Let’s Dance’ attitude always seemed to indicate that Bowie was never Under Pressure whilst performing or creating music. All said, there is Little Wonder of the impact that Bowie has had on the music industry.

Bowie may have passed away, but his music and his legacy, as a whole, will no doubt Survive the test of Time, as he was a Starman of few parallels. If David Bowie could somehow still hear us, we’d like to tell him that we won’t just Love You till Tuesday, but will continuously flip from Station to Station, hoping that one of your songs will be playing.

Titles in bold are David Bowie songs.
