Major General Mahmoud Tawfik has served as Egypt’s Minister of Interior since June 2018. In January 2026, he said that the Interior Ministry had intensified efforts to combat organised crime, particularly drug trafficking, seizing narcotics worth about EGP 27 billion and preventing the transit of synthetic drugs valued at an estimated EGP 34 billion into target markets, while also combating related money laundering.
