Mary Winpenny

From Belly Dancing to Building her own Dance Company

Award-winning belly dancer, Mary Winpenny, discovered her passion for the art when she first listened to Middle Eastern music, embarking on a journey that eventually led her to establish her own belly dance company, Pandora Entertainment. At Enigma’s 12th Celebration of Arab Glamour & Success, she delivered a show-stopping performance that left our guests spellbound. Enigma’s Habiba Abdulsalam had the chance to chat with the multi-talented performer, uncovering her inspiring path to success.

Born and raised in Moscow, Russia, Mary Winpenny has always loved immersing herself in diverse cultures around the world. Since turning 18, she has travelled extensively and participated in numerous exchange programmes across various countries, experiences that have shaped her outlook and guided her path. “I found my passion for belly dancing through music. When I first heard Middle Eastern music, I instantly fell in love,” Winpenny recalls.

Winpenny began her journey with strong support from her mother. “My mum noticed how much I loved dancing to Middle Eastern music and encouraged me to take belly dance classes,” she says. Her career progressed even further after she moved to the United States in 2016. “I started participating in dance competitions, which helped me launch a career as a professional belly dancer.”

Determined to build her craft, Winpenny trained relentlessly with several professional dancers and instructors, constantly striving to refine and expand her artistry. “Some of my favourite dancers that I had the privilege of studying with are Alla Vatc, Oxana Bazaeva, Diva Darina, Marta Korzun, and Jasirah,” she shares.

Along the way, Winpenny faced her fair share of challenges. “There is certainly some cultural stigma around belly dancing, especially outside the Middle East, since not everyone is familiar with this art form. Being a foreigner to the culture was also a challenge for me, but I am grateful for those challenges as they inspired me to learn more and push myself even further,” she explains. On the brighter side,Winpenny has also enjoyed many unforgettable highlights in her career. “I’ve got so many memorable events under my belt; I could probably write a book about them.”

Winpenny channels her unique style and vision into Pandora Entertainment, offering everything related to belly dancing — from fire and snake-charming shows to private classes. “I am not just the owner of the dance company; I’m also its face and a symbol for my dancers,” she says proudly.

Her journey stands as a testament to passion, ambition, and resilience. “Hard work and love for this art are what keep me at the top of my game. But I also try to maintain a work-life balance,” she emphasises. “My favourite things about belly dancing are feeling the energy of the crowd when I’m performing, the costumes, the music, and the freedom to express myself.”

Her advice for aspiring belly dancers is simple yet powerful: always strive for excellence. “Invest in the best classes with the best instructors, get the best costumes and props, and never stop learning,” she advises.

Outside of belly dancing, Winpenny leads an active lifestyle. She practises yoga and enjoys a variety of sports, including tennis, hiking, and swimming, activities that uplift her body and mind while keeping her spirit high.

At Enigma’s 12th Celebration of Arab Glamour & Success, Mary Winpenny showcased her talent in a captivating performance that left the guests mesmerised and forged a special connection with the magazine. “It is such an honour to be featured in this amazing magazine and be part of such a beautiful gala!” she says.
