Sherif Fathy was appointed Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities in July 2024 after serving as Minister of Civil Aviation since 2016. As part of his efforts to expand tourism in Egypt, Fathy met with representatives from major Japanese media outlets to promote Egyptian tourism and discuss the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM). He has also been proactive in expanding Egypt’s hotel capacity to meet the anticipated surge in tourist arrivals, with plans to add 18,000 rooms by the end of 2025 and more than 200,000 additional units within the next few years.
