Celebrity Weight Changes for Movie Roles

As if they don’t have a hard enough time with acting, these celebrities also changed their physical appearance to connect with their characters on a much deeper level. Here’s a round of applause for their hard work and dedication to entertaining us!

Christian Bale

He is the king of shocking the mass with unpredictable body transformations! Bale was unrecognisable after he lost 62 lbs by starving himself for his part as Trevor Reznik in “The Machinist”.

Liam Neeson

Neeson lost 20 pounds for his role in the movie “Silence”, directed by Martin Scorsese. According to People Magazine, Neeson said in a press conference for the film, “Martin wanted us all to look a bit more gaunt, which [co-stars Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield] did as well.”

Matthew McConaughey

He is famous for slimming down for his role in “Dallas Buyers Club”, which he also won an Oscar for, and for his part in “Gold”, where he gained 25 lbs by eating unhealthy foods such as cheeseburgers and pizza.

Chris Hemsworth

Hemsworth is popular for dramatically adjusting his weight for different movie roles. He bulked up for “Thor” and lost a lot of weight for his role as Owen Chase in “In the Heart of the Sea”.

Charlize Theron

Theron made jaws drop worldwide over her massive body transformation for her role as Aileen in “Monster”, in 2003. The healthy actress binged on donuts to gain 30 pounds. She told SPLICEDwire.com, “Aileen carried scars on her body from her lifestyle, and if I’d gone to make this movie with my body – physically I’m very athletic – I don’t know that I would have felt the things Aileen felt with her body.”

Anne Hathaway

To suit her role in the musical “Les Misérables”, Hathaway lost 10 lbs in three weeks before filming, and an additional 15 lbs while shooting. To reach this drastic change, she committed to a diet that was solely based on lettuce.

Jared Leto

We found Leto to be quite impressive as he gained 66 lbs for his role as John Lennon’s killer in Chapter 27 in 2007, and lost 30 lbs to fit Rayon’s character in “Dallas Buyers Club” in 2013.

Renée Zellweger

In 2001, the actress gained 20 lbs to fit a size 14 for her role as Bridget Jones. Since then, Zellweger’s weight has been unstable as she constantly lost and put on pounds. She told Vogue magazine in 2013 that, “I realized the influence of living in a society that focuses so much on physicality has affected me.”
