The 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards was held yesterday at the Microsoft Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, California. The ceremony was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and broadcasted on ABC.
Fantasy series Game of Thrones and limited series The People vs. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story owned the night with their slew of awards. In fact, yesterday’s celebration of TV success allowed GOT to become the winningest show in Emmy history with 38 total awards with its wins in ‘Outstanding Drama Series’, ‘Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series’ and ‘Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series’.
The People vs. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story, on the other hand, won 5 Emmys for ‘Outstanding Limited Series’, ‘Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special’, and swept all the limited series acting awards, with actors Courtney B. Vance, Sarah Paulson, and Sterling K. Brown being honored.
On the other hand, Tatiana Maslany took home the ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series’ award for her work in Orphan Black; Julia Louis-Dreyfus continued her Emmy dominance after winning the ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series’ award for a staggering fifth time; and Jeffrey Tambor was honored for his work in Transparent by nabbing the ‘Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series’ award.
The highlight of the night, though, was Egyptian-American sensation Rami Malek winning his first Emmy in the ‘Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series’ category. In doing so, Malek defeated a host of stars including veterans such as Kevin Spacey and Bob Odenkirk. In a direct reference to his deranged character on Mr. Robot, Malek started his speech by saying “please tell me you’re seeing this too.”
